Police were called to the family’s Landover home on June 2 after a 911 caller said Margaret Craig had not been contacted for several days and she was concerned for her well-being. Candace Craig opened the door and let authorities inside to search the house, police said. When officers entered the basement, they “immediately smelled the odor of decomposition,” the statement said.

According to the statement, a preliminary investigation allegedly suggests that Candace Craig killed her mother on May 23. The next day, Hardy helped her mother try to dispose of the remains, police allege. “Homicide Unit detectives will ensure a thorough investigation is conducted and both suspects are held accountable for their cruel and criminal behavior,” said Major David Blazer, Commander of the Major Crimes Division.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will confirm the identity of the victim and attempt to determine the cause of death. Authorities say the motive for the violence remains under investigation. Both Craig and Hardy are in the custody of the Department of Corrections. It is not clear if they pleaded guilty or hired lawyers.
