Detectives launched a murder investigation after a 16-year-old boy died in what police described as a “tragic incident.” Officers were called to Waterson Vale in Chelmsford at around 11:30pm. Sunday following reports that a child suffered serious injuries. The victim was taken to hospital where he later died, Essex Police said. In a statement, Chief Inspector Ashley Howard, from the Kent and Essex Serious Crimes Bureau, said: “This is a tragic incident in which a 16-year-old boy has lost his life.” We have a team of officers working hard to determine what has happened here and get justice for your family. A cordon has been established in Waterson Vale and it is likely that we will remain there for a while while investigations continue. I know this can cause disruption, however it is vital that we understand how this incident happened.

Police officers appear to have sealed off the bushes surrounding a playing field in the middle of Waterson Vale, using blue and white tape to cordon off the area. Residents have raised concerns about the park, where the incident is believed to have occurred.

One person, speaking anonymously to EssexLive, said: “We’ve lost count of the number of times we’ve dialed 999 because of that park.” It has been going on for three years since lockdown, I told the police there is drug dealing and anti-social behaviour. ‘This is the result of this, since no one will do anything. Now we have a very sad situation in which a young man has lost his life.’

Another said: ‘They need to put lights in here, it’s terrible at night. People say ‘I can take care of myself’, well that’s not the point.’ A third resident added: “It’s horrible for someone so young to die like this,” while another commented: “It’s absolutely horrible.” News of the incident shocked the local community, with people taking to social media to pay tribute to the victim, who has yet to be named by police. One person said: ‘I can’t even imagine the pain the family must feel. This is devastating, 16 years old, his life has just begun.’

Another woman said: ‘When is this going to stop? My heart goes out to the young man’s family and friends. It’s heartbreaking. While a third person added: ‘Another beautiful angel taken too soon. Thoughts and prayers are with family and friends.’ Forensic officers are already sweeping the area for clues after the murder, with several teams photographed at the scene.

DCI Howard added: “We are calling on anyone who was in the Waterson Vale area or surrounding roads in Chelmsford last night and may have witnessed or heard anything, or anyone with any further information to contact us to help with this investigation”. Investigators are calling on those with information about the incident to call Essex Police on 101 quoting reference 1321 dated February 12.
