A Costa Rican soccer player has tragically died after being eaten by a crocodile while bathing in a river to cool off. Jesus Alberto Lopez Ortiz, nicknamed ‘Chucho’, died after the reptile mercilessly killed him on July 29 when he was trying to cool off in a river in Río Cañas, Guanacaste province, Costa Rica.

The coarse footage shows the father of two fighting for life as the animal dragged him into its jaws. Another clip shows the crocodile shot dead in the water and carried to the riverbank, with local residents saying they followed it in a canoe to retrieve Chucho’s body.

The victim was a soccer player from Deportivo Río Cañas who leaves behind his young children, ages three and eight. Chucho’s family is calling on members of the public to help pay for his funeral costs. His team manager, Luis Carlos Montes, is also organizing a collection for the victim’s family.
