A New York bishop with a large following has been charged with fraud and extortion. Lamor Whitehead, who is known as “Bishop bling” and was held up at gunpoint while delivering a sermon in Brooklyn earlier this year, is charged with defrauding a parishioner out of his retirement savings, attempting to extort money and defrauding a businessman and the FBI lie to him

Whitehead was arrested Monday and will be arraigned in federal court, the Justice Department said in a news release.

He allegedly used threats or false promises to collect money from his victims, telling them the money would go toward investments that would benefit them financially.

A parishioner invested approximately $90,000 of his retirement savings with him, which Whitehead allegedly spent on luxury items and other personal purposes.

When FBI agents were executing a search warrant, Bishop allegedly falsely claimed that he had no cell phone other than the one he had with him, but that he actually had a second phone, authorities said.

Whitehead is charged with two counts of wire fraud, each of which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison if convicted. He is also charged with one count of extortion, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, and one count of making material false statements, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

Whitehead, known for wearing designer clothes and lavish jewelry, told CBS News York earlier this year that the media dubbed him “the flashy bishop.” He was held at gunpoint in the middle of a sermon he was giving in Brooklyn, and the suspect stole $1 million worth of jewelry, police said, according to CBS New York.

He said he believes his family was targeted because he helped turn in a wanted suspect in a fatal subway shooting in May. He said the media attention he got thereafter as “the flashy bishop” played a big part.
