A man was arrested after six people were killed in shootings in the Tate County town of Arkabutla, near the Mississippi-Tennessee border, in the vicinity of Memphis. One suspect, Richard Dale Crum 52, has been charged with murder. It is believed that he was acting alone, but authorities have not yet announced the motive.

Tate County Sheriff Brad Lance told the New York Times that the shooting began around 11 a.m., when suspect Richard Dale Crum shot and killed an apparent stranger at a convenience store. From there, the alleged gunman drove to his ex-wife’s house and shot her, in addition to wounding a man who was in the home at the time.

He then went to a residence behind his home and shot a man who investigators believe is Crum’s stepfather, as well as another woman who was in the home at the time. Finally, he shot two more men on a road near his own home. “We don’t have violent crime in the community very often,” Sheriff Lance told the newspaper. “It’s a very safe community.”

Richard Dale Crum charged with murder in Mississippi shooting

Local residents were shocked by the spasm of violence. “I heard the shot from inside my house,” Ethan Cash told WREG-TV. “I just woke up and I look back here, and I see a guy walking back here with a shotgun.”

An elementary school and a middle school were locked down while the suspect was pursued, Coldwater Elementary School said in a Facebook post. The lockdown was later lifted, with the school saying “all students and staff are safe.”

Arkabutla is about 30 miles (50 km) south of Memphis and the 2020 census indicated that the city has about 285 residents. “I was briefed on the series of shootings in Tate County,” Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves said. “The individual responsible has been taken into custody alive. At this time, we believe that he acted alone. The reason for him is not yet known.

“I will ensure that all state resources are available to law enforcement as we continue to investigate the situation. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) has been asked to assist in this investigation,” Reeves added. “Pray for the victims of this tragic violence and their families at this time.” Police found the suspect on Arkabutla Dam Road in a vehicle near a residence believed to be his home, where he was taken into custody without incident.Read More…..
