CALIFORNIA: A 79-year-old California man with a heavy heart was brutally beaten to death in Tijuana, Mexico while bringing donations to underprivileged families, his family said. Rudy Lazo was found dead in Mexico on April 19 and was apparently killed after a robbery gone wrong.

His son Juan Carlos went to Mexico to look for his body. He said that his father was beaten to death. “He was always a very generous person, he would help anyone,” Carlos told NBC4.

Rudy often traveled three hours from his home in San Bernardino to Tijuana to provide food, clothing, toys and other supplies to people in need, according to his relatives. His family said that despite the dangers, he felt safe because he was an elderly person and probably because of the work he was doing. “It is very dangerous there. So dangerous and he probably thought that he was not going to have problems because he is an elderly person, ”said Claudia Hernández, Lazo’s daughter. Juan Carlos drove from San Bernardino to Tijuana, 125 miles, to identify the remains of his father. He said that his father was brutally beaten to death and that he was killed during a mugging. “He didn’t deserve it. Not really, no human being deserves this,” Carlos said.

His death comes as the US issued sweeping warnings to Americans against traveling to Mexico, including Baja California. “Violent crime, such as homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery, is widespread and common in Mexico,” the State Department warned in February.
