A woman chased the man who sexually assaulted her and rammed her vehicle into his car multiple times to stop him, according to police in Gainesville, Florida. The April 2022 incident initially went unresolved because defendant Telvin Sweeting , 31, fled the scene, but DNA testing turned up a CODIS match, police said.

The woman had been drinking with friends in downtown Gainesville on the night of April 15, according to the arrest affidavit. Last seen at Simons nightclub, she woke up to find herself in the backseat of a stranger’s car, police said. “The VIC was lying on her back without her underwear, shorts, and a boot,” police wrote. “DEF was on top of the VIC, got off her and pulled up her pants.” She knew he had raped her and she could feel what she identified as semen, police said.

She did not consent to any sexual contact with him, officials said. The man, Sweeting, got into the driver’s seat and, when questioned, told him they were in a park, according to the affidavit. He allegedly told her that his name was “Brandon”. It was around 4:45 a.m. m. on April 16, officials said. He allegedly took her back to her car, but he had her keys and opened the door to her car.

“The VIC immediately ran to her car and located her cell phone which was partially broken (it had not been broken earlier that night),” police wrote. She “she Redialed the last person who called her and started telling them that she had been raped and she talked about calling the police. Meanwhile, she was trying to take photos of the DEF vehicle.”

Telvin Sweeting is chased down by victim

Police said they confirmed that she made the outgoing call. “DEF approached the VIC at this time and took the cell phone out of her hand,” police wrote. “A fight ensued when the VIC tried to retrieve her DEF phone as he got into her vehicle to leave. The VIC had 3 broken nails from the fight.”

But the woman managed to get into her vehicle and chased Sweeting’s car through town, hitting it multiple times to stop it, officers said. “The VIC ended up at 13 NW 10th Ave, where he last struck the DEF vehicle and lost it,” police said. She had a random person call 911 and police arrived to find her in distress and with broken fingernails, according to the affidavit. The woman described the suspect vehicle as a white four-door sedan, police said.

Authorities say they were able to track down Sweeting because DNA from the sexual assault kit returned a CODIS match for him. Alachua County records show he did not contest in juvenile court for running away or eluding police without regard for the safety of persons or property. As a second degree felony, this would have landed him in CODIS. He was also convicted of the first degree misdemeanor resisting an officer without violence.

In another 2009 case, he was convicted of three second-degree misdemeanors: “no driver’s license, never had one,” reckless driving as a first offense, and a hit-and-run in which the defendant left the scene of an accident that involved damage. A 2020 case for grand theft of a motor vehicle was dropped. A 2022 firearms and marijuana possession case is ongoing.

His registered car was seen on license plate readers before and after the incident, police say. They showed no damage to the rear bumper of him in Gainesville on April 15, 2022 at 4:58 PM. m., but a license plate reader in Lakeland showed damage on April 16 at 12:36 p.m. m.

“In this image, there is clear damage to the rear bumper of the DEF vehicle consistent with the VIC statement that she rear-ended his vehicle,” officers said. Sweeting was arrested Sunday. “Publishing Miranda, the DEF denied knowing the victim by her name, but said that she sleeps with many women,” the officers said.

He allegedly denied remembering having sex with any woman in the back seat of his car. He also denied taking the woman’s phone “or even having any recollection of such an incident,” police said. “DEF denied being involved in a car accident to cause damage to her vehicle,” authorities said. “DEF denied that anyone intentionally hit her vehicle with a car multiple times.”

According to the documents, an officer pointed to before and after images of the license plate reader. Sweeting allegedly said that he was involved in a hit-and-run in Daytona, but the officer pointed out that those photos were from Gainesville and Lakeland.
