The victims were black women and Hispanic youth and all but one were shot at random, according to prosecutors seeking the death penalty. Saucedo faces charges of first degree murder, drive-by shooting, attempted murder, aggravated assault, discharging a firearm in a residence, endangering and discharging a firearm in a residence.

Prosecutors allege Saucedo targeted the victims after dark and shot them while they were outside their homes or sitting in cars. Saucedo’s trial was originally scheduled for 2019 and was delayed three times.

Maricopa County District Attorney Rachel Mitchell said the trial is taking a long time to start because there are so many witnesses and victims involved.

Saucedo’s lawyers said more than 200 witnesses needed to be interviewed in the complex case that was also hampered by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“There are some realities when you have something like that, that’s so complicated. We want to get it right,” Mitchell told Phoenix television station ABC15.

Nancy Peña said her brother Horacio, 32, was among the nine people killed.

“We are still here. We are still waiting for an end to all of this,” Peña told ABC15. “It’s hard when they tell you it was supposed to be this year and when they tell you it won’t.”

Peña said her brother was killed after he was coming home from work, and her mother and her sister heard the shots.

“I don’t see myself moving forward until it’s closed,” Peña said, adding that she hopes her 70-year-old mother sees justice done. “I just want to do it more for her now.”
