The family of an 89-year-old woman is seeking explanations after she died months after sustaining horrific facial injuries while in a nursing home. Agnes Donnelly  a resident of Glasgow’s Broomfield Court Care Home, died a few months after an incident that left her face bloodied and damaged.

Although Donnelly, also called Nancy, died of pneumonia in January of last year, the house was locked up five months later, leaving Nancy’s family wondering what went wrong. The home, according to hers her son Colin, 65, “didn’t take care of her the way they should have,” and they insist Nancy was neglected, according to reports.

He further added: “We are still very angry about the terrible conditions our mother must have lived in for the last year of her life.” She added: “Her house didn’t take care of her like they should have. When we visited her, we could see that she wasn’t clean and it looked like they weren’t taking care of her.” She later said: “Her injuries to hers were first discovered by Nancy’s daughter Glynn, 69, on a weekly visit in October 2021.”

Staff members had to check on Nancy, who suffered from dementia, regularly, but none had mentioned seeing her wounds before Glynn’s arrival. Colin later added: “When my sister visited her and found her with those wounds on her face, it was a huge shock. But the administrator of the nursing home told us they didn’t know what happened to her because nothing was reported,” according to what reported by Metro.

The family alleges that after the grandmother of 10 was admitted to the hospital for a physical examination, medical staff discovered several additional bruises on her body before blood tests revealed that she, too, was dehydrated. Since the event, Larchwood Care has conducted an assessment of Nancy’s care, but later determined that her investigation revealed only “failures to communicate.” Social workers and the Care Inspectorate have also launched a joint investigation into the incident, Dailystar reported.

Larchwood Care announced in June last year that it was “not financially viable” to continue operating the home. Colin maintains that his family has not known anything about what happened to his mother and was never informed of the results of the investigation. Colin said that “It constantly comes to mind that we never got the answers we needed and that no one was ever held accountable for what happened to our mother.”

“We understand the concerns of Ms. Donnelly’s family and recognize her considerable anguish following the loss of a dear family member,” a Larchwood Care representative said. Glasgow City Council acknowledged that Broomfield Court Care Home was privately run and not a facility with which it had contracted, but stated that it was “aware of the concerns raised”.Read More…..
