A University of Washington engineering student was fatally stabbed more than 100 times while trying to protect her mother from her enraged stepfather. Angelina Tran, 21, woke up early Aug. 7 after hearing sounds of fighting at her family’s home in Seattle’s Beacon Hill neighborhood. Her stepfather, Nghiep Kein Chau, 54, had hit her mother at least 12 times in the kitchen, according to charging documents.

Tran quickly decided to intervene, prosecutors say, at which point Chau began attacking both women. Finally, her mother was able to get away from her and fled to call 911 while Tran held Chau in a desperate attempt to stop him from following her.

The two struggled and fell to the ground, when Chau allegedly grabbed a knife and fatally stabbed Tran a total of 107 times. She stopped the wave of stabbings multiple times during the rampage, charging documents say, including once to change clothes and once to grab. a different knife.

Security footage from the home also showed Chau searching for Tran’s mother after she called police, the Seattle Times reported. The agents finally arrived shortly before 5 a.m. m. and found the unidentified woman bleeding from the wounds on her face. They also found Chau, still holding the knife with blood on her clothes, before she allegedly admitted, “I killed someone.”

Chau was immediately detained and later told police that he had been “arguing” with his wife, whom he had been married to for 19 years. Through an interpreter, Chau allegedly recounted how she hit Tran’s mother because she thought she was going to divorce him and take her money.

He also said he was angered when Tran intervened, the charging documents say, and claimed he would have killed her wife if she had found her before the cops arrived. Officers then obtained search warrants and seized evidence from the home, including security footage from the prosecutors’ home. They say it showed the initial assault and much of the stabbing.

Chau is charged with first degree murder and first degree attempted murder. He is being held at the King County Correctional Center on $5 million bond after prosecutors argued he was a flight risk and a danger to the community. An arraignment scheduled for Wednesday has been pushed back to Aug. 31. Meanwhile, Tran’s friends and family have organized a fundraiser for the Asia Pacific National Center on Aging in memory of the engineering student.
