A 14-year-old New Jersey boy was killed in a suspected hit-and-run accident while riding his bike to his friend’s house Friday. The driver who allegedly hit him is in custody and is facing multiple charges.

Bryan Barbosa was traveling on Whitehead Avenue in the South River when a white pickup truck, allegedly driven by 63-year-old Michael Arena, struck the boy and drove on, police say, CBS reports. David Gudzak, a local homeowner, told CBS that he witnessed the horrifying incident while he was standing outside his home.

“The boy slid out of the front of the van and was lying on the ground. And I saw the kid on both forearms looking at the van,” Gudzak said. The security camera at his home captured the entire incident. Police say they were able to use Gudzak’s surveillance footage to identify and arrest Arena.

Chris Crinigan, one of Barbosa’s friends, told CBS that the teenager “had a really bright future.” He said Barbosa was on his way to his house when the accident occurred.

Julián Guindi, another friend of Barbosa’s, said that he was “calling him and calling him and calling him and he didn’t answer,” CBS reported. The two paid their respects to their late friend at the crash site, where a growing memorial of balloons and flowers has materialized, MyCentralJersey.com reported.

The community gathered for a candlelight vigil at South River High School, where Barbosa would have been a freshman this coming fall. Family friend Ariana Hill told CBS that the tight-knit community is reeling from the tragedy.

“It’s just devastating. You can tell the kids are really affected by that, and South River is a small town where everybody’s kid is everybody’s kid,” Hill said. “My condolences to his parents… She is his only child. They have taken it senselessly. The people, we are not doing well. The children are learning to cry.”

According to police, Arena faces numerous charges, including aggravated manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal car crash, report CBS, MyCentralJersey.com and News12 New Jersey. It was not immediately clear if he pleaded guilty or hired an attorney to comment on his behalf. Community members created a GoFundMe page to ease the family’s financial hardship.

“The city of South River is so small that we always take care of each other’s children who play outside. They go to the park. They ride their bikes,” the page says. “Hearing this horrible tragedy broke everyone’s heart.”Read More……
