Springfield police have identified a 44-year-old man who shot multiple officers in a nearly six-hour standoff in the 700 block of South English Avenue that ended early Sunday morning. Clayton A. Brewer of Springfield was arrested on two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm against a police officer, armed habitual offender, armed violence, and aggravated assault/discharge of a firearm/vehicle. Brewer was booked into the Sangamon County Jail on $1 million bail after being interviewed at SPD headquarters, Commander Sara Pickford said.
Clayton A. Brewer fired at an SPD officer who initially responded to the home for a call from a person with a firearm at 7:06 p.m. Saturday. Pickford said the officer saw Brewer in the rear of the residence and identified himself, at which point Brewer shot the officer. The officer was able to take cover and was not injured.

Brewer fired two more shots at officers who were in close proximity to the residence. One round struck a police rescue vehicle, or BearCat, Pickford said. Emergency and crisis response teams responded to the scene. The Crisis Response Team established contact with Brewer, who refused to leave the residence.
Brewer’s family members also spoke to him during the standoff. Police eventually deployed CS tear gas canisters, an irritant, at the house which eventually convinced Brewer to leave. A woman was inside the house during the incident. Pickford did not identify her because she is not under arrest.
Pickford said Saturday that she did not know the woman’s relationship to Brewer, but that it was not a hostage situation.
