Derek Minor Wiki – Derek Minor Biography

A Phoenix elder Derek Minor will serve 32 years in prison for the murder of his estranged wife, possibly with a machete, after being sentenced in Maricopa County Superior Court. Derek Minor, 73, was found guilty by a jury on November 17 of the second-degree murder of Cynthia Minor, 54, and of stealing Cynthia’s car after the murder, which prosecutors say she used to flee the crime scene.

Cynthia was found dead on September 6, wrapped in a quilt in Phoenix’s apartment near Osborn Road and 24th Street that the two had shared. Her head had been severely beaten as she lay in bed, according to court records.

During the trial, Maricopa County District Attorney Shaylee Beasley presented the case against Minor, focusing on a machete and screwdriver found at the scene and her previous conviction for the attempted murder of a previous girlfriend.

Minor’s lawyer, David Cutrer, claimed that he was too old to have committed the murder, that the relationship between Cynthia and Derek Minor had been amorous, and that the car Minor took was theirs.

Minor pleaded not guilty at his 2019 arraignment and maintained his innocence throughout. But, after an 11-day trial, the jury found him guilty on both charges and that the murder itself should be considered especially brutal and worthy of a heavier sentence.

Cynthia was reported missing on September 6, 2018, and was found dead in her apartment in the 2300 block of East Flower Street that same day. The prosecution alleged that Minor had fled the state after the murder and was trying to rent an apartment in California with a woman he considered to be his fiancée.

In court, prosecutors cited Minor’s prior conviction in Illinois for attempted first-degree murder of a previous girlfriend. They told the jury that Cynthia married Minor shortly after meeting him and was likely unaware of her previous conviction.Read More….
