Devan Schreiner Wiki – Devan Schreiner Biography

A “cold-blooded” Colorado woman who stood trial for ambushing and killing her ex-boyfriend, a USPS worker, while the victim delivered mail in 2021, was convicted of murder Tuesday in Boulder County. Jurors found that Devan Schreiner  now 27, shot Jason Schaefer, 33, multiple times, committing first-degree murder.

Boulder County Jail records reviewed by Law & Crime show Schreiner was initially booked into the facility at 4 a.m. m. on October 14, 2021, several hours after the shooting the previous afternoon. Although there is no sentencing information yet in the prison system, records show that Schreiner’s first-degree murder case is in the post-jury deliberation stage. Judge Patrick Butler immediately sentenced the defendant to life in prison without parole Tuesday, the punishment Colorado law requires in the absence of the death penalty.

As Law & Crime previously reported, citing the arrest warrant in Schreiner’s case, the shooting was investigated by the Longmont Police Department after Schaefer was shot outside the neighborhood mailboxes. He died on the spot. When the postmaster arrived at the scene of the USPS worker’s death, he commented, “Did the baby’s mommy do it?”

Prosecutors said the murder took place while the former couple were embroiled in a custody battle over their young child. Shocked, Longmont locals told investigators they heard four gunshots and saw a suspect in a hoodie running from the scene of the crime. Surveillance video didn’t take long to show the defendant’s vehicle was near the scene of the crime, according to court documents.

In an apparent failed attempt to create an alibi, Schreiner told investigators that he ate pizza rolls before the shooting and went back to work. Boulder-area District Attorney Michael Dougherty reportedly told CBS Colorado after the jury’s verdict and sentencing of the suspect that Devan Schreiner is “a cold-blooded killer.”

He “he took steps to get away with this brutal murder, but he underestimated two things. First, the victim was well-liked by his family and coworkers; the information and support they provided was essential,” said the prosecutor. “In addition, the US Postal Inspectors and Longmont detectives did everything possible and, along with our prosecution team, ensured that justice was done. As always, we appreciate the time and service of the jury members.”

9News reported that prosecutors read a victim impact statement from Schaefer’s mother in court. The grieving mother reportedly said she “hasn’t slept” since her son was killed and her family’s life has been “destroyed forever.” Schaefer’s mother also said her 7-year-old grandson, the boy at the center of the custody battle that preceded the murder, has now lost his parents. The boy reportedly lives with relatives in Connecticut. Barring a successful appeal or an act of clemency, Schreiner will never see outside the prison walls again. He will turn 28 on August 14.
