NEW YORK CITY: Erica Baez a Bronx mother was charged with letting her seven-year-old son drown in a hotel pool while eating at a bar and drinking cocktails, according to prosecutors. She also left her five-month-old baby alone in the room while she had drinks.

In connection with the tragic incident that took place at a Marriott hotel in Melville on January 13, 2022, Erica Baez was and has been held without bail on charges of second degree manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child. Young Katlyn, who spent more than a year of her life after the incident, died May 1, Suffolk County prosecutors said, the New York Post reported.

Charges on Erica Baez

According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, the arrested woman stayed at the hotel with her boyfriend, her seven-year-old daughter and her five-month-old son. On the day of the tragedy, her boyfriend went to work in the morning and later, at 3:30 p.m., asked the hotel staff to open the indoor pool. The workers warned him that he would have to take care of his daughter since there was no lifeguard on duty.

However, Báez left her son alone in the hotel room and her daughter played in the pool for half an hour while her mother went to the hotel bar. She then went for a second cocktail and half an hour later she returned to find Katlyn “floating lifelessly in the pool,” the prosecutor’s office stated.

After Baez saw her daughter drown, she didn’t jump right into the pool, as she took time to put her phone down next to her and remove her socks and shoes. Baez then lied to emergency workers who arrived on the scene that he left the boy alone for five minutes. Paramedics managed to revive Katlyn after her arrival. However, the young woman was forced to live on a ventilator after she was deprived of oxygen and suffered irreversible brain damage, prosecutors said.

Katlyn, who eventually became septic, died on May 1, 2023. The victim’s mother, who was arrested on May 15, pleaded not guilty to the charges. “This defendant’s alleged actions were selfish, reckless and heartless. We will do everything we can to ensure justice is served for little Katlyn, whose short life ended too soon,” said District Attorney Raymond Tierney.Read More……
