A 24-year-old father in Indiana was arrested for allegedly biting his newborn daughter multiple times, leaving “mouth-shaped bruises” and teeth marks all over the baby’s body. Gavan Rogers was arrested Tuesday and charged with one count of neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury and one count of domestic battery with bodily injury to a person under the age of 14, both felonies, court records reviewed by Law show. &Crime.

Rogers and the baby’s mother took their 2-week-old daughter to the Witham Hospital in Lebanon on Nov. 3 for a regularly scheduled checkup, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by The Lebanon Reporter. Shortly after arriving at the facility, hospital staff discovered suspicious bruises on the baby’s forearms, stomach, shoulders, knee and leg. Staff transferred the baby to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis and contacted the Whitestown Police Department. Whitestown is located about 20 miles northwest of Indianapolis.

A doctor at the children’s hospital reported that the girl appeared to have multiple bruises, several of which included visible teeth marks, according to Reporter. In an interview with a Whitestown police detective, Rogers said he had been staying with the baby and her mother in Whitestown for the past two weeks, but normally lives with her parents in Greencastle, located about 50 miles southwest of Whitestown.

Why did Gavan Rogers arrested?

When asked about his daughter’s injuries, Rogers told hospital workers that he likely “gapped kissed” or “played bit” the baby too hard, Indianapolis Fox affiliate WXIN reported. He reportedly told police that he must have “nibbled too hard” on the girl when she was fully clothed.

The detective on the scene reportedly wrote that he counted what appeared to be “at least six” bite marks on the newborn, according to Reporter. “These injuries could only have been inflicted with the use of excessive force, which would have caused [victim] severe pain,” the affidavit reported.

In addition, the detective learned that after the baby was born at Witham Hospital, several nurses filed disturbing reports saying they heard Rogers refer to the baby as “evil” and call her a “little bitch” and “ungrateful” when the child was in the neonatal intensive care unit, WXIN reported.

One nurse reportedly wrote: “I don’t feel comfortable sending this baby home to [the baby’s father]’s care.” Witham’s nursing staff also noted that Rogers seemed especially frustrated when her daughter cried and took more time to explain the danger of shaking the baby, according to WXIN.
