A recent college graduate was killed when a car he was working on crushed him to death. Ian Brunner had nearly restored a 1994 Miata and was doing some extra work when the jack that was supporting it collapsed. The 22-year-old had recently graduated from the University of Dayton in Ohio with a degree in mechanical engineering. When the incident occurred, Brunner was in the parking lot of a student housing facility. At approximately 7 pm on Sunday (May 7), an anonymous caller called 911 to report the event.

“I’m outside Campus South Apartments at the University of Dayton,” the unidentified caller told WHIO. “A car fell on a child, and he… this cat fell under him, and he’s trapped under it and he’s not responding.”

Brunner, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, died at the site. The University said: “We ask that the community keep this young man’s family, friends and loved ones in its prayers. Officials stated that their focus was “on the family who learns of the death of a loved one and respects their grief and the ability to inform immediate family members.

The school said, “This is a process and time frame that we cannot control,” the school stated. The University has internal support structures that are put in place immediately for those in our community directly affected by the loss,” as reported by the DailyStar.

“Miata is pain. Miata is love,” he wrote on Instagram at the time. “I just finished a complete engine rebuild, and it runs great now! Thanks to everyone who helped.” As they mourn, Brunner’s family has asked for privacy.

Ian earned his high school diploma from North Allegheny High School in 2019 before enrolling in the University of Dayton. According to his obituary, he participated in a variety of extracurricular activities, including skiing, cross-country running, track and field, and robotics.
