The “Back to the Bag” rapper’s attorney, Nicholas Rosenberg, told the Los Angeles Times that he was informed Valdez died from “a stabbing to the neck” in the shower. He also pointed out that the rapper had been attacked in prison before the incident on Tuesday. “People are very surprised,” Rosenberg told the outlet. “He was a very popular guy, very well mannered. People loved him.”

The incident is currently being investigated by the Investigative Services Unit and the Monterey County District Attorney’s office, the CDCR said. In a separate statement provided to the Times, officials said movement in the prison has been limited to aid the investigation.

Valdez was sentenced in Riverside County on December 22, 2022 to two years and eight months in prison for possession/possession of a firearm by a felon or addict as second offender and a concurrent sentence of one year and four months for possession/possession of a firearm with conviction of a violent felony, according to the CDCR.
