A 45-year-old dentist in Colorado is facing first-degree murder charges in the death of his wife, a mother of six, after severe headaches caused her to become brain dead, investigators said over the weekend. According to the Aurora Police Department, James Toliver Craig was arrested early Sunday morning, days after he allegedly took his wife of 43 years to the hospital.

“The charges arose from around 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday when Craig took his wife, 43, to a local hospital because she was complaining of severe headaches and dizziness,” police said. “Shortly after arriving at the hospital, her wife’s condition deteriorated rapidly and she was placed on a ventilator in an intensive care unit. She was medically declared brain dead a short time later.”

Although authorities did not immediately identify the victim, a since-deleted website for Craig’s dental practice in Summerbrook said her name was Angela. A Law&Crime search of the archived Wayback Machine version of that website shows that Dr. Jim Craig called himself and Angela “the proud parents of six great kids”:

“When suspicious details in this case came to light, our team of homicide officers and detectives worked tirelessly to uncover the truth behind the victim’s sudden illness and death,” said Aurora Police Division Chief, Mark Hildebrand, in a statement. “It was quickly discovered that this was a heinous, complex and calculated murder. I am very proud of the hard work of our Major Crimes Homicide Unit in solving this case and seeking justice for the victim.” The news of Craig’s arrest shocked the locals who immediately recognized it as his dentist.

“Keeping my dentist that I’ve seen for 18 years?! 👀 what the hell,” a former patient commented on APD’s Facebook post about Craig’s arrest. “This is heartbreaking and I can’t believe it.
