According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Oklahoma City Fox affiliate KOKH-TV, Brownfield left Athena and Athena’s 5-year-old sister with the now-arrested couple in April 2021, saying he was suffering from mental health issues and did not she could adequately care for the children. Officers with the Cyril Police Department began the search for Athena at approximately 2 p.m. on January 10, 2023 after Athena’s 5-year-old sister was found wandering outside the Adams home by a mail carrier. The mail carrier knew that Athena’s sister “wasn’t where she was supposed to be” and called police to notify them that she had found the girl alone, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI).

Shortly thereafter, police realized that there was another young child who was still missing and enlisted the help of OSBI to continue their search for Athena.

Two days after Athena’s disappearance, Brownfield reportedly told investigators that a year and a half earlier she had signed a handwritten note purporting to give custody of her daughters to Ivon Adams and Alysia Adams. . No official court papers were filed to transfer guardianship, nor were papers included that would have allowed the Adamses to enroll the children in school or receive medical treatment, KOKH reported.

“[Brownfield] did not want [her children’s biological father] to have the girls because of his mental state and previous allegations of abuse against him,” the affidavit reads. “[Brownfield] did not notify the Oklahoma Department of Human Services of the whereabouts of her two children at any time while they were in the care of Alysia and Ivon Adams.”

Investigators reportedly said that the last time Brownfield spoke to her children was about nine months before Athena’s murder, stressing that she did not communicate with any of the children on her birthday or holidays she. When Brownfield finally called, the children “did not seem interested” in speaking with her, the affidavit reported.

On January 17, 2023, authorities announced that the body of a girl, later identified as Athena, had been discovered after Alysia Adams admitted to seeing her husband beat Athena to death on Christmas Eve 2022. .
