An 11-year-old boy “destined for great things” has died after suffering a flesh-eating infection following a treadmill injury. Jesse Brown of Winter Park, Florida, died after developing a deadly infection, his family told Fox 35 in Orlando. Jesse’s cousin, Megan Brown, told the news station that she had recently injured her leg on a treadmill. Just a few days later, her mother saw that “his whole leg was covered in spots, purple, red, almost like bruises.”

He was quickly admitted to the ICU of a local hospital and doctors said he had developed a group A strep infection caused by group A strep bacteria. The infection turned deadly when it developed into necrotizing flesh-eating fasciitis and caused the Jesse’s brain swelled. Despite the best efforts of the doctors, the boy could not be saved.

His cousin added that doctors determined the infection was triggered after his injury on the treadmill. “They said that because he sprained his ankle, that’s probably where the infection struck him. Because he was already weak,” he told Fox 35. “For this to kill him in a matter of days was crazy. If there was more awareness, maybe we could have caught it earlier when we noticed he had a fever.” Megan also created a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for her funeral services and hospital bills.

Lakemont Elementary School also started a memorial fund, remembering the time he started school as “a sweet kindergartner.” “Jesse worked hard and had a big heart. He was one of our patrols that worked to keep the school safe, but also worked to make sure everyone started their day with a smile. Everyone who knew Jesse feels nothing but love. for him”. A strep refers to illnesses that can occur after being infected with the bacteria called group A strep, including strep throat, scarlet fever, necrotizing fasciitis, rheumatic fever, impetigo, and more. These infections can be serious if the bacteria invades tissue outside of where it normally lives.
