“It is with a heavy heart that we share that the terrible tragedy that occurred yesterday in Newton struck very close to home…shocking our faith community and our own family,” Paul Arpino and Ginny Arpino wrote. “They were our cousins and our aunt…and to Rita (Dugan) and Isabella they were more than best friends, they were adoptive family.”

Church members became concerned when they noticed that the deceased, in an extremely unusual turn of events, had failed to show up for Mass at Our Lady of Help Christians Parish. “His 50th anniversary was to be celebrated with a blessing after communion at the 10 a.m. mass. m.” Father Dan Riley of Our Lady Help of Christians told Boston-based ABC affiliate WCVB. “When they didn’t show up, I can’t go into details about who discovered them, but we were notified, and myself and several staff members spent the day there.”

“They are wonderful people,” the priest continued. “Very well known.” The family letter fondly remembered each of the deceased as devoted parishioners: “Three dear parishioners, people of the salt of the earth, great, great people, and this is a terrible tragedy,” Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said Monday.

A press release issued by the prosecutor’s office says there appeared to be signs of forced entry into the home and also notes that a search attempt was recently reported “within a half-mile of the death inquest location.” However, the two incidents are not yet believed to be connected. Police have called for caution in the Nonantum and Newtonville neighborhoods of Newton.

“I am very concerned about the occurrence of such a violent crime,” Newton Police Chief John Carmichael said during a news conference. “While this individual [or] individuals are still at large.” “As we mourn the victims of this senseless and violent tragedy, we ask all members of our community to remain alert and vigilant,” the NPD said in a follow-up press release. “We continue to supplement each shift with additional officers who will conduct directed patrols.”
