John Sullivan, a Massachusetts driver, allegedly struck an Asian man with his car and then drove 200 yards with him on the hood in what the victim’s family alleges was a racially motivated attack. Sullivan, 77, released racist slurs after the victim commented on his reckless driving.

Sullivan lost his cool and said “go back to China” after the victim approached him for driving too fast while children were around, according to WCVB. Just before 11 am on Friday, December 2, the victim, his sister, and his three children were standing in front of the Quincy Post Office when they observed Sullivan speeding down the street. “He said, ‘Go back to China. I’m going to go to the post office and I’ll be out in five minutes. If they’re still here, I’ll kill them all,'” Desiree Thien, the victim’s sister, said. Thien and her brother stood in front of Sullivan’s car and gathered information from him as he got out of his car.

Thien said: “He plowed into my brother. My brother rolled on the hood and grabbed onto the hood. He went about 200 yards, then braked and my brother fell. When (my brother) was trying to keep his balance, he hit my brother again. my brother, continuing his racial slurs.

Quincy police said Thien’s brother was thrown at a construction site into a 10- to 15-foot ditch and Sullivan left the scene. A witness tracked down Sullivan and gave police updates on his whereabouts. They later forwarded this information to the police in neighboring Braintree, where Sullivan was ultimately arrested.

Thien said: “He needs to know that not everyone can be bullied and not everyone will be silenced for intimidation.” Sullivan is charged with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury and violating civil rights.

Sullivan pleaded not guilty to the charges at his arraignment Friday in Quincy District Court, according to the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office. He is being held without bail pending a hearing on Wednesday, December 7 on his violent behavior.
