MICHIGAN: Michigan parents detained after being accused of starving their two-year-old son to death. Sierra Pearl Zaitona, 27, and Jonathon Matthew Cheek, 25, were arrested Monday, March 20 and have been charged with second-degree child abuse and second-degree murder. The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office stated that the couple reported finding their son dead in his crib last week on Thursday, March 16. Prosecutors wrote: “The coroner determined that the cause of death was starvation.”

Jonathan Cheek and Sierra Zaitona killed their son

Before the little boy came into the custody of Cheek and Zaitona, his health was fine while he was in foster care. During an arraignment, Macomb County Assistant District Attorney Molly Zappitell told the court that “for the record, the boy was healthy in foster care, and once he was in the care of these two people, he died according to Macomb. Daily. “I’m devastated. I’ve been crying all weekend, so sick I want to cry,” Zappitell said.

Prosecutors mentioned that the toddler was the biological son of Cheek and Zaitona. However, it is unclear why the victim was in foster care before and exactly when he returned to the couple’s custody at his home. Zappitell, who asked the court for high bail, presented the alleged killers as flight risks. Speaking of Zaitona, she allegedly said, “There’s no reason for her to stay,” adding, “She actually had the baby in Ohio to avoid alerting CPS,” to which Zaitona responded, “That’s not true.” At the time, her lawyer told her not to say anything, according to WDIV.

The couple charged with their son’s murder are now being held on $1 million bail set by Judge Ryan Zemke. Cheek and Zaitona, who will appear for a probable cause hearing on April 3, are required to wear a GPS strap if released.
