A Best Buy delivery man was sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years for fatally beating a grandmother and setting her on fire. Police in Boca Raton, Florida, said the defendant, Jorge Dupre Lachazo, 24, was an assistant to a delivery man who was bringing a new washer and dryer to the home of the victim, Evelyn Smith Udell, 75. Officials described Udell as being taken to an ICU in critical condition, with injuries including second- and third-degree burns to most of her body, brain hemorrhage, and multiple skull and facial fractures. “She has been placed in hospice care,” they said. The defense argued at Lachazo’s three-day trial that Udell’s death was neither premeditated nor intentional, according to CBS News. Lachazo was convicted of first-degree murder with a weapon, robbery with assault or battery while armed, and first-degree arson.

Police officers said they responded on August 19, 2019, at approximately 9:15 AM. m., to an accusation of assault. The witness, who worked as a delivery driver for JB Home Delivery, said he and Lachazo were hired to deliver appliances for Best Buy. They brought a washer and dryer to the Udell house. She was the only person in the residence, this man said.

The driver said that after swapping out the washer and dryer for the new items, she went outside to return several missed calls from her home office. Meanwhile, Lachazo stayed inside. He was supposed to brief Udell on the new appliances and answer her questions. But the driver said he soon heard screaming in the house and noticed the garage door slam. Concerned, he went to the front door and noticed blood on the “laundry/bathroom” floor.

Udell was on the ground near that blood. Dupre Lachazo, acting strangely, told the driver they had to go, according to the probable cause affidavit.
