A Pennsylvania newlywed is in critical condition after he was brutally attacked from behind at a downtown Pittsburgh hotel on the first day of their honeymoon. Larry Gilmore was found in a pool of blood with his pants torn off near the elevators in the fifth-floor lobby of the Even Hotel on Forbes Avenue around 7 p.m. on Monday, Channel 11 reported. The father of three was staying at the hotel on her honeymoon after his wedding on Sunday, Gilmore’s wife, Shalawrae, told the outlet.

“I went over to see what was happening and found him in a pool of blood,” she recalled of the horrific moment she found out about her new husband’s injuries. Gilmore was later taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital, where he remains in critical condition with a head injury, TribLive.com reported.

“Right now, he is still in critical but stable condition. He is still intubated and we hope he can pull through,” Shalawrae, who is pregnant, told KDKA. The suspect, Haiko-Lamar Joseph Calhoun, 26, was arrested on Smithfield Street shortly after the alleged attack, TribLive.com said, citing court records.

Video surveillance from inside the hotel shows Calhoun walking up behind Gilmore near the elevators and strangling him, the documents continue. Officers say Calhoun then slammed Gilmore’s head into the ground multiple times and kicked and stomped on him as he grabbed various items, including his pants. Calhoun reportedly walked away and back several times during the beating.

“He just went in after him, actually snuck up behind him and choked him,” Shalawrae told Channel 11. Calhoun told police Gilmore said something offensive to him that caused the altercation, the outlet said. As of Thursday, the alleged shooter, who was not a lodging at the time of his arrest, remains in the Allegheny County Jail charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, robbery and reckless endangerment.

Earlier this week, Gilmore’s family members also protested outside the Even Hotel to demand that it be closed while security measures are assessed. “I haven’t eaten, I haven’t slept… This is taking its toll on me,” Shalawrae said. The hotel’s second set of ground-level doors are closed from 8 p.m. at 8 am. every day, and can only be accessed with the guest’s key, the staff explained to the outlet. “Our thoughts are with this guest and his family during this difficult time,” the hotel said in a statement.

“We appreciate the quick actions of our hotel staff, the Pittsburgh Police Department, and local EMTs who provided assistance to our guest.
