Luke Hawkes, 28, of Wadham Close, Bridgwater, was sentenced at Taunton Crown Court today (Friday 27th January) after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and failing to provide a sample.

Hawkes’ sentencing is one of the first to be carried out under new sentencing guidelines that allow judges to hand down harsher sentences for dangerous and negligent driving deaths, moving the maximum term from 14 years to life in prison for dangerous driving. . Hawkes received the sentence after killing 19-year-old Bethany Branson on Tuesday, November 8 of last year.

He has also received a driving ban for 12 years and seven months. He was driving a white Ford Transit van at high speed on the A38 Taunton Road when he ran a red light and collided with two cars having the right of way at a junction. Bethany (pictured below) had been the passenger in the first car Hawkes collided with. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her family have paid tribute to their ‘beautiful’ and ‘adored little lady’ after the sentencing. The court heard how Hawkes had shown no remorse for his actions, refusing to complete a breathalyzer or roadside drug and alcohol swab test. He was recorded on a body warning video saying: “I hope I killed someone. Oh well, you know what, I’ll be three, four, five years old. I hope I have killed them.”

Bethani Branson cause of death

Hawkes had previously been involved in a minor traffic collision further up the A38 Taunton Road, near the showground roundabout, prior to the collision that killed Bethany. He then left the scene for Bridgwater, where he was later involved in the fatal collision. Three other people, including Hawkes, suffered minor injuries.

Principal Investigating Officer Andrew Roebuck and Family Liaison Officer Martin Farnell said in a joint statement: “The family has shown exceptional courage and bravery in speaking so openly about Bethany, who is clearly loved and appreciated by all who knew her. .

“Bethany was a jovial and outgoing young woman with her whole life ahead of her, who dreamed of a career with animals and had a passion for rugby. “We hope this significant sentencing for Hawkes will bring the family some closure following the devastating loss of his daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, goddaughter and friend.”

Judge Paul Cook told Hawkes: “You can tell this was a long, consistent and deliberate driving course. It was obvious that you were drunk, as I have seen the state of your intoxication in various videos. “It was abundantly clear that Bethany was a bubbly and contagious person, destined for a life of generosity that has broken the hearts of the family. “You created a sea of carnage and then you left. You were then heard saying ‘I’m glad she’s dead, she had it coming,’ and ‘I wish [you] killed someone.'”Read More….
