Luke Ingram, who was charged earlier this month with killing his grandfather, allegedly sexually assaulted the latter as he died. The 19-year-old was charged Nov. 9 with second-degree murder of 85-year-old Darwin Ingram at 34 Clermont Court in Palm Coast. Assistant State’s Attorney Jennifer Dunton brought the case to a grand jury on Monday, November 28, and obtained the indictment on the first-degree premeditated murder charge.

The aforementioned charge is a capital offense that could result in a death penalty. Dunton also added a new charge of sexual assault with a weapon after Luke allegedly raped Darwin with an object as he lay dying. The charge is a life crime. In addition, the teen also faces one count of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, a first-degree felony, and three misdemeanor counts.

According to Flagler Live, Luke’s trial and defense would likely center on the perpetrator’s mental fitness to proceed. His father, Clint Ingram, 48, revealed that his son has schizophrenia and that the day before she had convinced him to drop out of college in Georgia and come to Palm Coast because he had been behaving strangely. According to Luke’s arrest report, he had arrived on the night of November 8 at the house where his grandfather had lived for decades after retiring from a career in the federal government.

The teen reportedly dined with his father and his grandfather watching the two of them at all times. Clint said he went to sleep after dinner “and locked the door because of Luke’s behavior,” according to the arrest report. He said that he could hear his son talking to Darwin about the house dog and a clock before falling asleep.

At some point, Clint woke up “to a grunting, screaming sound” and immediately left the room. He found Darwin lying bloody and unconscious in the living room, while Luke was sitting in his grandfather’s room. Clint tried to call 911 but was attacked by his son. He somehow managed to escape from the house, was injured and began frantically knocking on the neighbors’ doors to seek help and hide from Luke. None of the nearby residents opened their doors because it was just after 3 am. However, they called 911.

Agents arrived at the scene at 3:14 a.m. When there was a knock on the door, a shirtless Luke opened it and raised his arms. He ignored instructions from law enforcement and stood motionless in the driveway of the house. Police body camera footage shows an officer firing Taser darts at Luke before he is taken into custody. WKMG reported that Darwin was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the perpetrator allegedly fought and bit the officers as they brought him into an interview room for questioning.
