A man has been charged with the murder of his ex-partner in a Cork city flat in the early hours of New Year’s Day. Brazilian national, Miller Pacheco, 29, was brought before a special session of Cork District Court on Monday evening, where he was charged with the murder of Bruna Fonseca at 5 Liberty Street, Cork on 1 January. of 2023, in contravention of common law.

Det Garda Padraig Harrington gave evidence of arrest, charge and reprimand. He told Judge John King that he arrested Pacheco, who has an address at Room Three, Five Liberty St, Cork, at 2:45 p.m. m. Monday at Bridewell Garda station in Cork City and charged him at 3:51 p.m. m. of murder.

He said that Pacheco indicated through a translator that he understood the charge and in response he said that he “had nothing to say.” Appearing in court in a black crew-neck sweater, black sweatpants and black sneakers, the defendant was assisted by a Portuguese translator during the brief court hearing. He was not required to speak during the hearing.

Sergeant Pat Lyons called for the defendant to be taken into custody at Cork Prison to appear in court again via video link on January 9. Judge King then ordered the defendant’s remand in custody. Bail is not available in district court in the case of a murder charge.

Pacheco’s attorney, Aoife Buttimer, requested that her client receive all necessary and appropriate medical care while in custody. Judge King said that would be addressed as part of the medical evaluation process upon arrival at the prison.

Ms. Buttimer said that her client was working but she had a low income and requested and obtained free legal assistance. Three members of Ms Fonseca’s extended family and a friend sat at the back of the courtroom during the proceedings, accompanied and supported by a Garda family liaison officer.

Ms Fonseca was found dead on Sunday after the Gardaí were called to number five Liberty St, in the heart of Cork city, at around 6:30am.
