A gunman shot and killed eight people and wounded at least seven others at a busy mall north of Dallas on Saturday, police said. The gunman, whom authorities said they think acted alone and whose motive was not yet known, was killed by a police officer after he began firing outside of the Allen Premium Outlets mall in Allen, Texas, the city’s police chief Brian Harvey said at a press conference.

WFAA-TV reported that police at the scene said there were multiple victims, including children. His conditions were not immediately known, but WFAA reported that the Collin County Sheriff said the shooter is dead.

A crowd of hundreds of people who had been shopping stood outside across the street from the mall on Saturday night. The agents circulated among them asking if anyone had seen what happened. Fontayne Payton, 35, was at H&M when she heard the sound of gunshots through the headphones she was wearing. “There was so much noise it was like I was outside,” Payton said.

People in the store dispersed before employees led the group into fitting rooms and then into a lockable back room, she said. When they were given the go-ahead to leave, Payton saw that the store had broken windows and a trail of blood to the door. Discarded sandals and bloody clothing lay nearby. Outside, Payton saw bodies.

“I pray they weren’t children, but they looked like children,” he said. The bodies were covered in white towels, slumped over bags on the floor, he said. “It broke me when I went out to see that,” he said. Farther away, he saw the body of a burly man dressed entirely in black. He assumed he was the shooter, Payton said, because unlike the other bodies, he hadn’t been covered.
