A Texas woman is accused of stabbing her fiancee to death in their home. The defendant, Liliana Cervantes, 25, allegedly said that she passed out during the incident and then tried to stitch 32-year-old Nathan Bryan Freeman up. “The officer stated that he woke up to water splashing on her and her baby, and he passed out again,” an officer said in court, according to KTRK. “Next thing he remembers (is) trying to stitch up the complainant and calling 911.”

Houston police initially announced Freeman’s death on March 20 in a statement last month, though they did not name anyone involved. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene, officials said. Cervantes was arrested Monday, according to online prison records.

Nathan Bryan Freeman killed fiancee

The documents say that Cervantes stabbed Freeman with a meat cleaver. Authorities described her as “highly intoxicated.” Freeman’s mother, Tessa Freeman, told KTRK that he and Cervantes met through Facebook and were together for two years. They shared a daughter, 6 months old. She said things seemed to be going well and she didn’t see any signs of trouble.

“My husband and I went to visit them for Thanksgiving and they seemed perfectly happy,” she said. “We had dinner with his parents and it was great. They just moved into the apartment. We had fun.” But authorities say Cervantes killed Freeman in her apartment while her daughter and Cervantes’ 4-year-old daughter from another relationship were at home.

Nathan Freeman suffered three stab wounds. One was on his chest. Authorities did not immediately suggest a motive. “I do not believe you. I don’t believe anything he says,” Tessa Freeman said. “I think I was just making it up to try and cover his ass, so yeah, now I have to do justice for my son.” He now wants to get custody of his granddaughter. The baby and 4-year-old boy are reportedly with Cervantes’ family.

“Since she’s being charged, I want my grandson,” Tessa Freeman told the outlet. “That’s the only thing I have of my son.” A GoFundMe campaign to pay for the Freeman memorial has raised $7,270 of a $10,000 goal through Wednesday. “Nathan will be truly missed,” wrote his cousin Kendra Cranston. “He was the father of three beautiful girls!
