First responders found the girl unconscious and took her to a hospital. She died on Friday.

Court documents indicate that Chagnama had been caring for Zury at her apartment since late last year, WFLD reported. After one of the girl’s parents dropped her off at the house last Thursday, Chagnama allegedly noticed that the girl had thrown up on her bed.Chagnama then lifted her up forcefully and swung the girl over her shoulder to pat her on the back. Chagnama allegedly threw Zury on the bed and, seeing that the baby was having difficulty breathing, she contacted her mother at her work and told her that something was wrong, according to the report.

Norma Chagnama killed 4-month old baby

Los Angeles CW affiliate KTLA reported that when Zury’s mother arrived, she found her unresponsive baby in Chagnama’s arms and began administering CPR until authorities arrived. Her death was ruled a homicide and the cause of death was abuse, KTLA reported. The girl had suffered a significant spinal cord injury, she had swelling in her brain and hemorrhages in the optic nerves of both eyes.

During a bond hearing Monday, prosecutors told the court that after Zury’s death, her father contacted Chagnama and her husband to inform them of the tragic news, according to KTLA. The couple then allegedly went to Zury’s parents’ home, where they allegedly told the grieving parents to “trust God’s word” and then gave them $2,000, saying it was for funeral expenses.

The judge stressed that the $2,000 payment could be an act of kindness or something more nefarious, KTLA reported.Chicago PBS affiliate WTTW reported that during Monday’s hearing, prosecutors said Zury’s parents had been arrested last month and charged with child endangerment.

The two reportedly left the baby in their car as they entered a restaurant. Zury was briefly in the custody of the Department of Children and Family Services, but she was returned to her parents about two weeks before her death.Chagnama’s attorney, Niklas Lofgren, told WFLD that Chagnama was only trying to help the girl, that she may have sustained injuries from attempts to catch her breath.

“So obviously Norma is devastated. We do not agree with the accusations. We maintain her innocence,” Lofgren told the station in a statement. “We don’t believe the schedule the state’s attorney set matched exactly what happened that day. Norma had never been in trouble with the law before. She has always cared for this child, as well as other children.”Read More…..
