American BMX star and three-time X-Games medalist Pat Casey was killed in a motorcycle accident when he was just 29 years old. The incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. m. at Slayground Motocross Park in Ramona, Calif., on Tuesday after he lost control and then was ejected from his motorcycle, according to CBS 8. Casey was reportedly traveling with friends when the tragedy struck. He was pronounced dead at the scene despite paramedics trying to save his life for 55 minutes, according to the San Diego Sheriff’s Office.

According to the San Diego Union Tribune, California Highway Patrol Officer Jared Grieshaber said Casey did not land after performing a jump. Investigations into the death are still ongoing. The 29-year-old was a leading figure in the BMX world, winning gold at the 2021 X-Games.

Casey is survived by his wife, Chase, and his two young children, Reid and Taytum. The Caseys have a home in Riverside, CA, which includes a ramp and dirt road, which is used for their famous Drem Yard videos. X-Games posted a photo of Casey and delivered a moving tribute on his Instagram on Wednesday.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Pat Casey and our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, children, parents and siblings,” the statement read. “A true legend in the action sports community, Pat will always be a member of the X Games family and an inspiration to the lives of everyone he touched.” The motocross world has expressed its grief following Casey’s passing, including six-time X-Games gold medalist Kyle Baldock.

‘I can’t believe I’m writing this, we lost an icon today! Pat thank you for blessing us all with your kind and loving personality,” he wrote on Instagram. You’re the toughest person I’ve ever met, we’ve been friends since the ASA days, about 10 years ago, and you’ve always inspired me to be tougher. We will all miss you so much it doesn’t seem real.

His partner TJ Lavin also paid tribute to his late friend on Instagram Wednesday. ‘The world lost one of the baddest it ever did. Two-time X-Games medalist Anthony Napolitan said Casey was “determined to be a good father, determined to be a good rider” during a presentation on the longtime BMX competitor. “If kids could take anything from Pat, it would be to live each day as if he were their last, and I think Reid has captured that idea,” Chase said of the 2020 feature. In the same mini-documentary Casey said; ‘the only thing I need my children to know is to enjoy life. You only have one, enjoy it.
