A 48-year-old woman and day care provider in North Dakota was arrested for allegedly beating a 5-month-old boy in her care to death last year. Patricia Ann Wick was arrested and charged with one count of murder in the course of and in furtherance of certain crimes, child abuse by caregiver and operating an unlicensed family child care home, records reviewed by Law&Crime show.

According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Law&Crime, Carrington Police Department officers at approximately 1:50 p.m. On September 26, 2022, he responded to a 911 call at a home located in the 400 block of 2nd Street regarding a medical emergency. The dispatcher reported that there was an unresponsive baby at the location. Upon arrival at the scene, first responders found a woman performing CPR on a young child. Police took over until an ambulance arrived and transported the boy to CHI Medical Center. The baby was later airlifted to Sanford Medical Center.

The next day, investigators received a medical report saying the boy had “clearly sustained a traumatic head injury and subsequently suffered cardiac arrest with probable anoxic brain injury,” and that the symptoms would have been visible “immediately.” Anoxic brain injuries are caused by a complete lack of oxygen to the brain.

The boy died two days after being admitted to SMC. A subsequent autopsy determined that the boy’s death was a homicide caused by “complications of blunt force head and neck trauma.” In an interview with Wick, the daycare provider, she allegedly told investigators that the victim, identified in court documents as “R.N.” – was sleeping in bed after eating while three other small children were sleeping in the same room, when the victim began to cry.

“[Wick] said that R.N. woke up the other child too. [Wick] said that she grabbed R.N. and put R.N. on a blanket,” the affidavit says. “[Wick] then she went to find the other child and sat him down at the children’s table, put his bib on him and warmed up his plate of food. [Wick] said that she started listening to R.N. coughing [Wick] went into the living room and saw R.N. vomiting [Mecha] rolled RN. next to her and [Wick] said R.N. ‘It just wasn’t there.’”

She claimed that she then smacked the boy on the back and butt to try to get a response, and he took “a big breath”, before Wick called out to the victim’s mother “and that was it”. . However, later in the interview, Wick allegedly said that when he moved a crying victim from the bed to the blanket, he may have put the child “too hard” and admitted that he “wasn’t nice to him and that she I was frustrated with [the victim] that day.”

Wick further admitted that the victim had broken her arm while she was in her care two weeks earlier and said that she had fallen from a swing in her garden. The victim’s mother told police that Wick did not contact her about the baby’s broken arm until she picked him up that day and that Wick never again inquired about the victim’s well-being.
