A Florida babysitter has been arrested after the 10-month-old baby in her care died Wednesday. According to police, the boy was allegedly left inside a hot car for about five hours.According to a news release from the Baker County Sheriff’s Office, Rhonda Jewell picked up the baby, whom she has been caring for on and off since June, from the residence of the child’s mother around 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

The 46-year-old caretaker then drove south to another residence, where she was also caring for other children. That’s when police allege that she arrived and entered,leaving the baby in the vehicle. It wasn’t until around 1 p.m. when the mother came to pick up the child, Jewell allegedly realized the baby was still in the car, according to the news release.

Charges on Rhonda Jewell

According to NBC, the National Weather Service reported that temperatures in the area were 97 degrees at the time. The temperature in the car was recorded at 133 degrees when the child was found. WTLV reported that medical staff said the baby’s external temperature registered at 102.1 degrees while his internal temperature reached 110 degrees, but hospital medical staff told police that 110 is the highest temperature the thermometer could read.

Baker County Police say the girl was transported to Fraser Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased. Jewell was subsequently arrested and turned over to the Baker County Detention Center. She has been charged with aggravated murder of a child, according to authorities.

Jewell made her first court appearance Thursday morning, police say. Bail for her was set at $25,000 and she is also required to have GPS ankle monitoring upon release. It was not immediately clear if Jewell had pleaded guilty and her attorney, George Nelson, declined to comment. Baker County Sheriff Scotty Rhoden said online Thursday that the department is asking everyone to respect the family’s privacy. Rhoden said it was painful for him and his team to reveal details about the case.
