Ron DeSantis wiki – Ron DeSantis Biography

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law a bill Monday giving him control of the Walt Disney World Home Rule District, punishing the company for its opposition to the call “Don’t Say Gay” law. . The bill requires DeSantis, a Republican, to appoint a five-member board to oversee government services provided by the Disney district at its sprawling Florida theme park properties.

“Today the corporate kingdom finally comes to an end,” he said at a bill-signing ceremony in Lake Buena Vista. “There’s a new sheriff in town and accountability will be the order of the day.”

The signing came as DeSantis prepares for an expected presidential run and marks a high-profile legislative victory for a governor whose tapping into cultural and political divides has brought him to the forefront of national Republican politics. DeSantis, whose book, “The Courage to be Free,” will be published Tuesday, has moved in recent weeks to expand his national profile and political network through fundraising events and meetings with donors, elected officials and conservative influencers.

The takeover of the Disney district began last year when the entertainment giant publicly opposed “Don’t Say Gay,” which bans instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity from kindergarten through third grade and lessons that are considered inappropriate for the age.

DeSantis takes over Disney district, punishing company

DeSantis moved quickly to penalize the company, ordering lawmakers in the GOP-dominated Legislature to dissolve the Disney Autonomous District during a special legislative session last year, beginning a closely monitored restructuring process.

In February, DeSantis called on lawmakers to renegotiate with Disney and end state control over the district in another hastily called special session that signaled the governor’s willingness to wield state government power to achieve political goals, a strategy that has been he hopes that will continue in the coming months before his possible candidacy for the White House.

The new law changes the name of the district from the Reedy Creek Improvement District to the Central Florida Tourism Supervisory District and places it under various levels of state supervision. Board members are currently appointed through entities controlled by Disney.

It leaves the district and its financial capabilities and debt obligations intact, addressing one of the main concerns of surrounding governments. It also bars people who have worked at or contracted for a theme park in the past three years from serving on the district’s new board of directors. Having a separate government allows the district to issue bonds and provide zoning, fire protection, utilities, and infrastructure services on its land. Republican critics of the district argue that it gives Disney a business advantage not available to others.
