TENNESSEE: A Howard woman accused of involvement in the 2022 death of her 22-month-old daughter has pleaded guilty. Savannah C Masters, 25, pleaded guilty to one count of enabling child abuse, a first-degree felony, in Knox County Court of Common Pleas. Masters admitted that she allowed her boyfriend, Danial L Shahan, to beat her daughter at her Howard residence on January 31, 2022, and that she waited about 12 hours to take the girl to the hospital.

The girl, Emily Pruitt, died three days after being admitted to National Children’s Hospital in Columbus. She had been declared brain dead. Masters will be sentenced on May 18. She faces 16 and a half years in prison.

Savannah C. Masters accused of killing daughter

“We wanted him to not be able to appeal, and we wanted him to serve as many consecutive years as possible, and that’s how we got to that number,” Knox County Assistant Attorney Christine Williams said, referring to the joint recommendation to give Masters eight years in prison. Masters had originally been charged with enabling child abuse, the same charge to which she pleaded guilty on Wednesday, April 19. taking it to the final stage,” Williams continued. “We were satisfied knowing we could get eight years in a row.”

Shahan, 29, was sentenced to 19 years in prison in March for his role in Pruitt’s death. He pleaded guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter, a first degree felony; and one count of child endangerment, a second-degree felony, according to Knox Pages. Shahan had originally been charged with murder, an unclassified felony, and child endangerment, and would have faced between 15 years and life in prison if convicted. He would also have given her a chance for parole after 15 years, Williams said her office was not willing to take the risk.

Following an agreement and the updated charges, it was determined that Shahan would spend more than 15 years in prison and would be released after a set period of time. “He will spend every day of those 19 years without the possibility of parole, and they also agreed to waive any kind of appeal,” Williams told Knox Pages in February. “If we had entered the realm of an unclassified felony, he would have the possibility of (achieving) parole before the age of 19, and we didn’t want him to be given that opportunity.”

“That’s why our office decided to come up with a concrete number that can’t be broken down by his good behavior or whatever he has to do to get out of prison early. We felt like 19 years was a good number to make sure that (he ) to be in prison) for quite some time,” added Williams.Read More……
