Police are continuing to piece together a Thursday night incident that left a man hospitalized after he opened fire on officers, according to police. Stephen Thompson, 26, was driving just after 10 p.m. in Victorville when officers saw his car. Deputies say the vehicle was related to an attempted homicide earlier in the week. When officers tried to stop the driver, he fled town, officers said.

Patrol officers gave chase, calling for backup as the chase reached speeds of 140 mph, San Bernardino sheriff’s officials said. The CHP offered helicopter support as the pursuit reached Adelanto. There, Thompson crashed his car near Seneca Road and Jonathan Street, not far from John Mgrdichian Park.

Stephen Thompson was shot and killed by officers

Thompson jumped out of the wrecked car and fled from officers, who say the man was armed with a gun. As officers walked through the neighborhood, Thompson stepped out of a yard and opened fire on an officer. Several bullets hit the police car and Thompson went on foot towards a house.

The deputies surrounded the house. As armed police approached, Thompson ran into a dirt field, turned to officers and fired more rounds, authorities said. As he fired, the officers began shooting, hitting Thompson, who dropped the gun. The officers rushed to help the man and called an ambulance.

Thompson, whose hometown was unknown Saturday morning, was rushed to a nearby hospital where he remains in the custody of officers. He is expected to live, authorities said. Agents did not provide details about the attempted murder case involving Thompson.

No deputy was injured. Those involved are on paid leave until cleared to return to duty. The department’s Special Investigations Division responded to take over the shooting case involving the officer.
