The family of a popular 16-year-old stabbing victim from Coffs Harbor have mourned a young life cut short as they call for community support. A 17-year-old man was charged with murder on Monday after a 16-year-old, who can now be identified as Trey Johnston, was fatally stabbed on a beach north of Coffs Harbor over the weekend. Trey’s aunt, Billee-Jo, has since started an online fundraiser to support the youngster’s mother, stating that she was a popular and much-loved member of the community.
“Unfortunately, we lost our beautiful boy on Sunday to a horrific stabbing at Corindi Beach,” she said. “Trey was a beautiful, smart and intelligent boy who had his whole life ahead of him, and now we only have memories. “Trey was well known in our community and was loved by many. “Through this difficult time, we are trying to come together as a family to support each other, but especially our sister Rikki and Trey’s brothers during this traumatic time.
“We are hoping to raise $15,000 to cover the cost of a funeral/wake and also be able to cover Rikki’s daily expenses to help her recover.” Supporters shared their thoughts for Trey, with one saying: “I can’t imagine the pain his family is going through. We are heartbroken for them.” The fundraiser has so far raised nearly $17,000.

Local police received an emergency call on Sunday around 5:40 p.m. m., reporting an incident on Pacific Street in Corindi Beach, 30 minutes north of Coffs Harbour. Upon arrival, they discovered that Trey had suffered a stab wound to the thigh. Officers immediately administered first aid before paramedics could arrive on scene.
Despite their efforts, Trey succumbed to his injuries at the Coffs Harbor Health Campus. Footage from the scene showed officers combing through vegetation in the coastal town, using rakes, shovels and sniffer dogs in an attempt to locate the weapon believed to have been used in the tragic incident.
Local resident Robert Robertson recounted the nightmarish scene where emergency personnel rushed to save the victim. “I saw a young man on the road, a lot of people around him, the police came, a lot of people trying to help him,” he said. “It’s a pretty quiet little community here. “My heart goes out to the young man’s family.”
The 17-year-old suspect has now been indicted for crimes including murder, assault resulting in death and illegal possession of substances. He has been denied bail and is scheduled to appear in court. Acting Superintendent Matt French expressed his sadness at the loss of life. “I met with the victim’s mother this morning, and it is a senseless and tragic loss of life,” he said.
