The Bank Plaza Apartments residence shortly before midnight on Thursday, January 5, when the daughter woke them up to tell them that she had stabbed her brother.

The girl is currently in juvenile custody with the Tulsa Police Children’s Crisis Unit, which is leading the investigation. A Tulsa police news release noted that she is being held at the Family Center for Juvenile Justice.

Tulsa Police Capt. Richard Meulenberg said officers responded to the incident Thursday night after receiving a call about a 12-year-old boy assaulting and stabbing a 9-year-old boy. After arriving at the scene, the police launched an investigation and discovered that the 12-year-old girl and 9-year-old boy involved were siblings.

Officers also learned that the boys’ parents were sleeping upstairs when her daughter woke them up and revealed that she had stabbed her younger brother. “Officers, EMSA, fire personnel arrive there, start taking life-saving measures, the 9-year-old boy on the scene,” Meulenberg said. “The 9-year-old boy is being transported to a local hospital and unfortunately died of those injuries at around 2:37 this morning.”

The statement, which did not identify any of the children, said efforts to save the victim’s life included taking him into surgery. Tulsa Police Department Chief Franklin tweeted: “All homicides are tragic, but the second homicide of 2023 in Tulsa shows a definite societal problem. The question is, how does society deal with one child killing another? kid?”.

Ulsa police have not established a motive for the killing, saying it is up to the courts to discover intent in this case. “Intent is going to be a key component that the judicial system will have to sort out,” Meulenberg told Fox 23. “Obviously we did do some interviews, but the interviews with a 12-year-old boy are very preliminary.
