13-year-old shot in head on outside the Stapleton Houses on Staten Island

A teenager was shot in the head in what police believe may have been a targeted attack at a Staten Island playground on Friday, police and sources said. The boy, who sources say is 13, was shot by two masked gunmen just before 4 p.m. around Fulton and Warren streets near the Stapleton Houses, according to police. “I heard shots and my friends panicked. We all sit in silence,” a PS 78 second grader told The Post. “The teacher told us to shut up. She told us to go under our seats. Don’t move, don’t make noise. I need to keep them safe,’” the girl said. “Everyone, my friends, was in a panic. A girl was crying. She was scared.”

EMS took the young man to Richmond University Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. A witness told The Post that the victim “didn’t look well” as EMTs performed CPR. “Seeing those things is very traumatic. You see a kid laying there… a bunch of other kids wondering if his friend will survive or not,” said Mike Perry, 40.

“Imagine what those kids are going through, the trauma they have to go through,” added Perry, 40, who works as a violence interrupter. Another switcher of violence, Malcolm Penn, confirmed that the boy is an eighth grader at The Eagle Academy for Young Men of Staten Island in the Clifton neighborhood. Penn described the teenager as a “bright, energetic kid full of life.”

“He is a child from this community. He knew him from going out, playing basketball, being at the park. He is very energetic in schools. For the most part, he’s an energetic, good guy.” The policemen believe that the young teenager was attacked. Police tape blocked the handball and basketball courts in the playground.
