CALIFORNIA: The Oxnard Police Department has released body camera footage showing the moments leading up to the murder of a man who threatened police officers. Body camera footage, released Friday, March 17, shows Barcenas charging officers with a five-foot steel rod as officers conducted a DUI investigation. Bárcenas, who did not participate in the investigation, confronted them. Officer Shayn Schwartz has been accused of subsequently killing Bárcenas. He was assisted by officers Alexus Santos and Bryce Parker, according to VC Star. Adam Barcenas has a long history of violence, disorderly conduct and robbery, according to the outlet. VC Star also reports that he attacked two elderly people in Oxnard in 2019, one of whom, Armida Castro, 71, died a few days after the attack.

The three police patrol cars were reportedly parked near a lawn and bench outside the Post Office building between A Street and Oxnard Boulevard. In the first footage, Santos is seen talking to the DUI suspect as Bárcenas began to yell. “Hey, you fucking pigs,” he yelled. “I hate you.”

Santos said: “Careful… go back”, when Bárcenas appeared. He was seen holding a large stick. Santos took the Taser out of him, as shown in the video, which is about seven minutes and 42 seconds long. Barcenas was seen holding the bar and approaching Schwartz, and it appeared that he was raising the post when he was shot. He was then seen to trip and drop the post.

The incident was captured on three different body camera images. In all of them officers can be heard yelling, “Hey, put it down!” After the shots were fired, Schwartz told his radio: “Gunshots. The officer needs help.” The department said three of the four shots fired into a hot Bárcenas. He was hit in the right inner thigh, left hip, and left upper torso. Bárcenas was initially treated on the spot. He was later taken to the Ventura County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Schwartz, who has been with the department since April 2022, previously served with the Burbank Police Department as of 2018. While Santos has been with the department since April 2020, Parker joined in April 2022. Parker will He previously served as a Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff. since 2019. All three officers have been placed on paid administrative leave.

The incident will now be investigated by the department’s major crimes unit. The report will be forwarded to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office for legal review. The department’s professional standards division will conduct an administrative review to determine whether the officers’ actions were in line with agency policy.
