Charges on Alejandro Vargas Diaz

It happened on July 22, 2018. During the argument, the victim struck Vargas-Diaz in the face and knocked him to the ground, prosecutors said. Vargas-Diaz ambushed him in the pool hall, fatally shooting him in the back, neck and shoulder, then left New York state. A month later, police found the murder weapon, a 9mm pistol, hidden in a tree on the Setauket Port Jefferson Greenway Trail and a murder warrant was issued for his arrest in August.

Nearly three years after the murder, Vargas-Diaz was arrested by a US Marshals Task Force in Florida on a tip to stop the crime. Authorities charged him locally with concealed carry and possession of a fictitious identification card. On November 11, 2021, Vargas-Diaz was extradited to Suffolk County.

On Monday, he pleaded guilty to murder and one count of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, prosecutors said. His sentencing is set for September 13. He faces between 23 years and life in prison. His attorney, Christopher Brocato, told Law & Crime that his client let his emotions get the best of him, which ended in a tragic outcome.

“He realized that what he did changed the life, not only of the victim, but also of him, his family and the family of the victim,” Brocato said. “A lapse of five minutes changed the lives of many people.” Family members made an emotional plea for help finding the killer a year after the incident when a $5,000 reward was offered for information leading to the killer. The victim, a father of three young children, was described as humble.

“My heart is broken,” his mother, Luz López, said through tears. “No one is happy now.” No details were revealed about what the plot was about. “It doesn’t matter what the argument was about,” the victim’s brother, Jason Rodriguez, said at the press conference at the time. “Nobody deserves to lose their life over a little argument.”Read More……
