19-year-old woman who came to hospital for back pain but allegedly hid newborn in trash

Body camera footage shows the tragic moment a 19-year-old patient is confronted by medical personnel, police and her mother for allegedly hiding her stillborn newborn son in a garbage bag. “We discovered a dead baby in the bathroom,” the doctor said. Alexee Trevizo Body camera footage.

The defendant, Alexee Trevizo, said that she delivered the baby and that she did not know what to do. “Lexee, I told you about this,” her mother said. “I only asked you, honey, to tell me the truth.” Trevizo said that she was scared. She told everyone that the baby was not crying.

As previously reported, police in Artesia, New Mexico, said Trevizo went to a hospital for lower back pain. But a janitor cleaned a bathroom after the defendant used it. Realizing that the garbage bag was heavier than usual, she checked and discovered the newborn.

At the beginning of the released body camera footage, a nurse told responding officers that Trevizo had a positive pregnancy test and she denied having sex. She said that she had to go to the bathroom and she was there for quite some time, she said. They had her open the bathroom and discovered “blood and shit” everywhere, she said.

She had been cleaning it. They took her back to her hospital room. The nurse said that she was afraid that she had done something to herself at that time. But then she discovered the newborn in the trash can.

“The baby is dead,” she said. “She killed the child.” She described the newborn as full-term. Trevizo’s mother was surprised when the nurse told her that the baby was born full-term. “Lexee, have you seen the news about the girls, what they do to their babies and go to jail?” said the mother.

Just a few weeks ago, another teenage mother in New Mexico was convicted of attempted murder for placing her newborn son in a plastic bag and dumping the baby in a dumpster. In that case, the defendant told investigators that she did not know what to do and she panicked after learning the day before that she was pregnant. Trevizo’s mother left, saying she had to call her husband, but she immediately returned to press her daughter about where she put the baby.

Trevizo said that she put the baby in a bag. The officer in the video told her mother to give him time and that Trevizo would speak with detectives. As seen in the video footage, authorities finally removed the defendant after the doctor said the 19-year-old was still bleeding significantly and had not delivered the placenta.

“Artesia Police Department detectives submitted case information to the 5th Judicial District Attorney’s Office on March 28, 2023. A criminal complaint was approved on May 10, 2023, and formal charges were filed against the suspect and the victim’s mother,” police said.
