A Minnesota man has been convicted of killing his girlfriend by beheading her on a public road. On Thursday, Alexis Saborit, 44, was found guilty of the murder of America Thayer, 55, in July 2021, following a court hearing on January 25, during which he “waived his right to a trial with jury,” read court records obtained by PEOPLE from the Minnesota Judiciary.

Other witnesses then “saw a man standing outside the open passenger door striking the victim with a hand weight,” he continued, adding that they “saw the man cutting into the front passenger seat with a large knife and then pulling out a decapitated body and severed head outside the vehicle.”

Speaking to SW News Media in 2021, Thayer’s co-workers at MyPillow detailed the devastating impact of her brutal murder.

“I went there today and went to the store and bought him a rose and a teddy bear to put on his desk,” Jamie Worley said. “When I got there, I didn’t even look at any of my other coworkers. I just stood at his desk with my head down. Everyone was crying. It was a very emotional day and still is.”

Thayer’s friend of five years, Nicky Kendrick, also described Thayer as “soft-spoken, great fun, and always up to amazing stories.” “She was really the nicest to everyone.
