TEXAS: The Army has issued a statement regarding Pvt. Ana Basalduaruiz death on base, reporting that there is no evidence of “foul play.” The Fort Hood Army Criminal Investigation Division officer added Thursday night, March 16, that the incident remains under investigative circumstances surrounding her death. “Army CID will continue to conduct a thorough investigation and gather all the evidence and facts to make sure we find out exactly what happened. Information related to any possible harassment will be fully addressed and investigated,” the statement read.

According to the Department of Defense’s fiscal year 2021 report on sexual harassment and assault in the military, 29% of women and 7% of men experienced sexual harassment. The percentage has risen for women, since in the last report for fiscal year 2018, 24% of women claimed to have suffered sexual harassment in the body.

A combat engineer who served with the 1st Cavalry Division for 15 months, Pvt Ana Basalduaruiz was found dead Monday, March 13 at the base. In an interview with Telemundo, the heartbroken family shared with officials that she died by suicide. “She told me ‘Mom, everyone wants me to sleep with them, but they are ——-‘,” said the grieving mother, Alejandra Ruiz Zarco, as reported by ABC News.

Ana Basalduaruiz found dead

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Private Ana Basalduaruiz and extend our condolences to her father, mother and sister,” said Lt. Col. Patrick Sullivan, 91st Engineer Battalion commander. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time. She was an exceptional teammate who will be truly missed.”

“The loss of any of our soldiers is a tragedy and not unlike the death of Private Ana Basalduaruiz. Our hearts and thoughts go out to Ana’s family, friends and colleagues,” said Col. Christopher Dempsey, commander of the team. Army of the 1st Armored Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division. “We have been in constant contact with both parents of Privada Basalduaruiz, and we will continue to keep them informed,” he added.


In a similar case, Army specialist Vanessa Guillén was killed on the same base after allegedly being sexually harassed by another soldier. The defendant committed suicide when the police were chasing him. Later, a report confirmed that Guillén was the victim of sexual harassment by a superior. Her sister Mayra Guillen, also commented on Basalduaruiz’s death on Twitter: “I am aware of the death of Ana Basaldua in Ft Hood, TX. May she rest in peace.
