A transgender butcher has admitted to kidnapping a schoolgirl while she was dressed as a woman and then subjecting her to a series of sexual assaults in her home. Andrew George Miller, known locally as Amy, pleaded guilty on Thursday in Edinburgh High Court, which heard that he had locked his young victim inside her bedroom.

The court heard that the 53-year-old woman, who is believed to have started living as a woman about six years ago, offered to take the girl, of primary school age, home in February this year. Instead, however, he took her to her home and confined her to her bedroom, subjecting her victim, who was a stranger, to a series of sexual assaults over the course of a day.

Police later found the girl at the house near Galashiels, after being missing for more than a day. The case is likely to reignite the debate over transgender rights in Scotland, following a highly divisive dispute over SNP proposals to allow Scots to change their legal sex simply by signing a statement.

SNP ministers repeatedly insisted that making it much easier to gain legal recognition, which critics say would make it easier for male predators to access women-only spaces, would not pose a risk to women or girls. However, gender-critical campaign groups will argue that Miller’s case undermines the claim, particularly since she presented herself as a woman when he lured the girl into her car.

It follows the case of Isla Bryson, also known as Adam Graham, who was initially sent to a women’s prison in January after being found guilty of raping two women. Bryson was sent to a men’s jail after a protest. In Miller’s case, the court was told that he is transitioning into a woman.

The girl was able to escape after Miller fell asleep and she was able to call 999 to contact the police, who arrived within minutes.
