INDIANA: An Indiana teenager named Anthony Hutchens, 16, who claimed to police that a “shadow man” had ordered him to commit murder, has been found guilty of killing 6-year-old Grace Ross. St. Joseph Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Sanford sentenced Hutchens as a juvenile to a total sentence of 64 years on Friday, March 31.

Anthony Hutchens killed 6-year-old Grace Ross

Hutchens received two 55-year sentences for Ross’s murder after being convicted in St. Joseph County, as well as another nine years for child molestation. The juvenile facility will present Sanford with a report on Hutchens’ time there when he turns 18. After that, Sanford will decide whether Hutchens should be released from custody, sentenced to an adult facility, placed in community corrections or remain in the juvenile facility until he turns 21. Hutchens will be required to register as a violent sex offender if and when he is released.

Ross was discovered dead in a wooded area near her New Carlisle residence near South West in March 2021. She was sexually assaulted, strangled, and suffered blunt force trauma. Her cause of death was determined to be suffocation homicide after she was found with blunt force injuries. Hutchens was just 14 years old when he murdered Ross. He was charged as an adult. His lawyer announced that he would appeal the decision, arguing that the case should have been heard in juvenile court.
