An Indiana race car driver was killed on Friday, August 18 in an apparent road rage incident. Ashlea Albertson, the driver for Tony Stewart Racing, was a passenger in a white 2018 GMC Terrain driven by Jacob Kelly. She was involved in a fatal two-vehicle crash on I-65 in Jackson County, according to CBS News.

According to a social media post shared by the 24-year-old’s family, Kelly and Ashlea were engaged and would marry in 2024. According to police, video from the scene showed Kelly’s GMC Terrain and Austin Cooper’s. A black Chevrolet Malibu engaged in a dangerous speed contest while traveling north on I-65.

The two drivers also attempted to change lanes and continued to not be allowed to change lanes. Cooper’s vehicle then began to change lanes into the path of Kelly’s vehicle,” police said. “Jacob Kelly lost control of his vehicle and spun, causing the two vehicles to collide in the middle of the lanes at heading north,” the statement read.

After the incident, Albertson and her fiancée were immediately transported to the University of Louisville Hospital, where the 24-year-old race car driver was pronounced dead. Meanwhile, Kelly was treated at the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries to her. Cooper, along with a minor passenger, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, Indiana.

An investigation into the tragic incident is currently underway as blood tests and toxicology results for both drivers are still pending. Upon completion of the investigation, possible charges in the case will be determined. On Friday, the father of the accident victim took to his official racing Facebook page to announce his death.
