The mother of incoming Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate was killed in a drive-by shooting in Chicago over the past weekend, according to multiple reports. Ashely Griggs, 40, was fatally shot around 2 a.m. Sunday in the Garfield Park neighborhood on the west side of the Windy City, according to local police. She was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she died of her injuries and she was later identified as Tate’s mother.

Four other people, a woman and three men between the ages of 32 and 42, also suffered injuries in the shooting, although their lives are not believed to be in danger. The Chicago Police Department released information from one of the injured victims stating that the shooter was “riding in a vehicle” at the time of the incident.
